Back to Offense

Wheel offense

  • The offense starts with our ball handler at the top
  • The four other players will be in a line at the top of the three point line with the ball handlers/shooters on the wings and our post players at the top of the key

  • Ball Handler's Reads:

When the guard is starting this offense, he should be reading the top two defenders.

  • If they are inside of our top post guys, the play should be run accordingly with a pass to the wing.
  • If they "cheat" over to the outside of the top post, the point guard has the option to drive directly to the goal.
If that happens, the wing players (square & triangle) should cut to the goal.

When the ball is passed to one of the wing players (triangle in this example):
  • The post player on that side (circle) takes a path to the corner going straight down the lane and then curling to the corner if he does not get the ball.
  • The post player on the opposite side (diamond) cuts through the lane setting a pick on the center man of the zone for the count of two, then continues out of the paint.
  • The opposite wing player (square) runs a wheel route to the ball-side low post looking for the ball.
  • The point guard will act as if he's following his pass, then curl back around the backside looking for a lob or backside pass.
  • The wing with the ball (triangle) has options:
- His first look is to the ball side post player (circle) as he cuts down the lane.
- Next look is to the weak side wing (square) as he cuts to the post.
- Next look is to the high-post (diamond).
- Next is to the point guard (X) as he loops around.
- Next is to the player in the corner (circle).
- He always has the option to dribble and drive if he sees an opening.  If he attacks, he'll have the point guard on the back side wide open.
